Nij and Tara revisited! – Real Wedding

Way back in September last year I put a post on my site titled “Nij and Tara – Live!”. That post was put up just a couple of days after they tied the knot down in Glengarriff, Co. Cork and the post was to show a little video that I made for them as a surprise.

The post is here is you want to see it – Nij and Tara – Live!

However, I never got around to showing off any shots from their wedding – until now! How time flies!

Anyway – I wanted to post this slideshow to show just a ‘small’ sample from their day – if you think this is a lot you should have seen their book!

When I look back on this slideshow it really makes me smile and have a bit of a giggle. We all just just had an incredible day that was full of non-stop laughter.

The only word I can use to describe the reception as is ‘bonkers’. The band – who I must get the name of from Nij and Tara – were, let’s just say, not your typical wedding bad. I have a video lying about somewhere that I must upload and share at some point – I have never seen a bodhrán played quite like it.

Until then, on with the show.

99′s for everyone!

This is a short and sweet post. Very sweet actually. I shot a wedding today and the the bride and groom had thought of the most unique idea to welcome guests as they came out of the church. An Ice Cream van! And what a day they got for it! It was a scorcher!

I chanced my luck at getting into the van as I knew it’d be the perfect opportunity to get big smiling faces of practically every guest as they lined up to get their 99. It was no bother though and I was made welcome on board Harry’s Ices.

I must say, Aideen and Rob (Bride and Groom) waited very patiently in the blistering sun allowing all their guests to get served before them. They had hands to shake and pictures to pose for but they got their chance eventually.

“Look’s good Rob! Make that two.. “

One very happy couple.

Rob has the right idea!

About a minute after this was taken I was tucking into my very own 99 and I have to say – it was to die for. Harry is the man! (even though it’s run by Jim..)

Note to all future bride and grooms – you too can have Harry pull up outside your church – go to www.harrysices.com to book them now! Please!

Congrats folks on an absolutely super day. It was a joy to photograph!  Now then, I must take a look at the stuffing cupcake’s in mouths shots :)

Self-back patting?

While going through Nicola and Philip’s wedding slideshow one last time today I gave myself a little pat on the back. I have shown a shot from their wedding before with the two of them walking on a beach. However, on reflection, I think I like this one even more.

I’m so happy with this shot. As all photographers out there will know, shooting into the sun ain’t easy, especially when trying to focus on moving targets. In this shot the sun was low on the horizon and wedding party were having a nice gentle stroll across the beach so I had to act quick to get the shots I was after. This is one of those shots I just couldn’t be happier with.

When I can share more from their day I’ll definitely do so :)

Wicklow. Dead. Beautiful.

Hiking in the Wicklow mountains. It has it all. Rough terrarin, marshy bog land, gravel pathways, amazing scenery, beautiful plantlife, the gnawed on carcass’s of dead animals, waterfalls, blue sk…. hold on… back up… carcasses?

Yes. That’s right! While out on a leisurely walk up Lugnaquilla last Sunday I came across this!

“ohh deer me…. “

Pretty grim. I’m glad to say it was the only quite horrible thing we came across. The rest of the day was pretty spectacular. That Sunday we just had the most incredible weather. Endless blue skies in all directions and with just a slight haze at the top of Lugnaquilla it was possible to see for miles around. I’m always blown away when it comes to the Wicklow mountains. They may not be the tallest, steepest or toughest to climb in Ireland but it’s incredible to think that after a short drive from Dublin you soon have your hiking boots on and will be heading toward some peak in the distance (and in my case usually without a map, compass or any real idea as to how to get there!).

I didn’t have my big camera with me but brought my trusty Lumix along and took what I could. To see the rest of the not-so gory images, click here.

A Tilt Shift Timelapse Wedding

I’ve had my tilt shift lens for a few months now and regular visitors to the site will know all too well how much I’m in love with it. If I could get away with using it all the time I would! But, it’s just ideal for most things. I guess I’m still quite attracted to it’s novelty factor and long may it last I say!

Something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now is make a time lapse video using it. It’s something that I’ve seen done quite a lot so I can’t claim the idea as my own. However, I’ve yet to come across one shot at a wedding. So, last weekened at Brooklodge I had the perfect opportunity to create one. We had the group shots over with nice and quick and after getting plenty of my usual candid shots I was left with a lot of time on my hands. Brooklodge Hotel has lots of areas to shoot from a height, something that lends itself quite well to tilt shift photography.

I started by taking some of guests mingling in the main reception entrance where they’re greeted with drinks and canepes. I then went outside where most of the guests were enjoying the glorious weather – I spent around 30 minutes in two locations. Once I was finished there I went into the main reception room and set the camera up in the balcony to get guests coming in to take their seats for their meal and finally the last part of the video shows the room being cleared up and prepared for that evenings dancing.

I’d love to have left it running at two points in particular – for Sarah and Kevin’s entrance (the bride and groom) and for the first few dances but I needed my camera to shoot those moments from ground level. Maybe another time.

All in all there was around 5700 individual photographs taken, usually at 1 second intervals.

So, without too much more waffle – here it is. Enjoy.

Night shooting – The Boyne Bridge

I took a drive to Drogheda late last night to get a shot I’ve been wanting to take for a long, long time. I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve driven over the Boyne Bridge at Drogheda and wished I had my camera with me. Finally though, with the weather just right I packed the camera, tripod and all important flask of coffee in the car and set off for some night shooting.

I wanted to get some shots of the bridge that I haven’t really seen before. That ruled out any shots from the motorway, the N51 roundabout or from any of the nearby housing estates. So instead I drove to the road that runs right underneath the bridge. I think it’s called the Glen Road (isn’t named on google maps or on my sat nav). It was the perfect spot.

I spent about half an hour there trying different exposures and lenses and came away very happy with the results.

As the bridge is lit so beautifully in glowing pinks and blues I have included both the colour and black and white conversions in the slideshow.
