Guns N’ Roses live! Belfast Odyssey Arena.

I’ve just looked up at the little clock at the top corner of my screen. It’s 3:40am. Bed calls but the blog is calling much louder. The reason being is that just a few short hours ago I was starring down the barrel of my lens trying to set my sights on one of music’s biggest stars. Axl Rose. For this was my very first gig for MCD and Guns N’ Roses were blowing the roof of the Odyssey Arena in Belfast.

The brief was short and sweet. We meet at 8. Get our passes. Then wait until around 9 where we’d (the photographers covering the gig) then be brought into the photographers stand and get ready for action. We’d be allowed to shoot for the first 3 songs with no flash and that was that.

While waiting, I stood in complete awe and wonder. Resisting the urge to pinch myself. I knew they’d be late on stage but I really never noticed that they were keeping people waiting as long as they did (around 40-45 mins). I was too busy looking around me, trying to check my twitter, reading emails from my friends wishing me luck to be worried about the promptness of the band.

We were pretty far back. Taking our places just either side of the mixing desk which was about 3 quarters of the way back on the main floor. Telephoto lenses where the order of the day. Shame I didn’t have one with me! Apart from a couple of shots with the wide angle (above) my 135mm was firmly fixed to the camera. I knew that all I could do was try to be as artistic as possible with the shots as there was no way I could compete for shots of Axl with the guys beside me and their 400mm lenses.

When they did hit the stage, the place went ballistic. Plastic pints getting fired around the place, fists in the air, an array of tiny screens from mobile phones and cameras shone like mini torches. People where going absolutely crazy! It was awesome!

Three songs is not a long time. Opening with Chinese Democracy then straight onto Welcome to the Jungle (which resulted in the more craziness x100) and then It’s So Easy. As the song ended I felt the tap on the shoulder and that was that. Time to put the cameras away. I have never had such a buzz photographing anything – sorry brides but I’m sure you’ll understand ;)

MCD – I hope I did you guys justice. Thank you!

Roll on the next gig and this time, I’m going to bring a bigger lens!

Summer sneaks

Regular visitors to my site will probably have noticed that the number of posts during the summer has been a lot lower than usual. The reason is pretty straight forward. I’ve been so busy shooting and editing weddings that I just haven’t had the time to blog as much as I’d like to. I have a bunch of weddings that I’d love to sit and blog about but finding the time to do it is difficult when the priority has to be getting the wedding pictures to the bride and groom.

However, just to give you all something to look at and in a pretty crafty way to tell you about some of the more recent weddings I’m going to share a shot from each wedding that took place in July and August. (There will be one exception, with me sharing a few from Sarah and Connor’s as you really have to see the sequence and two from Ashleigh and Alan’s)

The chosen shots may not necessarily be the best from the day, or your typical shot of the bride and groom, but for me and more importantly to them, they have a certain meaning and they’ll understand why I choose it.

So, I’ll begin.

My turn to second shoot – Siobhan and Kevin

A month ago I joined the truly brilliant Christina Brosnan to be her second shooter.

Second shooting, to put it as basically as I can, is acting as a second photographer. For the second shooter it’s not a paid job. You do it purely to experiment, see how others work and hopefully learn something along the way.

This was my first time to act as second shooter (Christina second shot for me back in May which you can see on her blog here) and I totally loved it for several reasons. Firstly, you have zero pressure on your shoulders. You could in effect, come home with no photos and it wouldn’t matter – you’re not the official photographer. Secondly, it’s fun to shoot with someone else, bounce ideas off, see how they work and basically just have some company. And lastly, I was able to really get to grips with some of my lesser used equipment. Primarily my tilt shift lens. The tilt shift can be a bit of an awkward thing to use. Especially in a wedding scenario where timing is everything. So to use a tilt shift on the fly can be taking a bit of a gamble. So my oppourtunity as second shooter was the perfect opportunity to really get the most out of it. It was almost like a day of training. Training which has paid off as I’ve used the lens pretty extensively in every wedding since. It gives some wonderful results and forces your eyes to concentrate on particular parts of the image. I love that.

The wedding was that of Siobhan and Kevin who were a super couple who seemed to constantly smile and laugh there way through the day. That just makes our jobs so incredibly easy. (It’s still work though.. honest)

Magic is Magic!

One of the very first things I did this evening when I arrived home after today’s wedding was to offload the memory cards and have a look back at a few shots in particular.

The reason – to see if I could somehow, using my photographic evidence, figure how how on earth Jack Wise was able to trick us all today. Jack Wise is a Dublin based magician who was hired to entertain the crowd at the drinks reception. Hats off (with rabbits inside), he was incredible. I followed him around from table to table to capture peoples reactions, which were a pretty even mixture of ‘hands over open mouths with wide eyes’ to ‘jaws hitting the floor’. I was usually in the latter category. Just dumbfounded in all honesty.

Anyway – I took a ton of photographs (because that’s my job) and also some video (so that I could later slow it down and figure out how he does it and then take my very own magic show on the road). After reviewing the evidence to CSI levels, I can conclude – I have no idea how on earth he does it.

Here’s a shot from just after he’d turned my coffee cup upside down, removed a small red ball, then two small red balls. That wasn’t enough so he put the cup down again and said who knows what’ll turn up – you guessed it… A flipping turnip appeared. He then turns to a fella who was in the dumbfounded category and said “That not enough for you? what do you want? A basketball?”……

Awesome.

Post update – Here is a little video. Seriously.. how on earth?

Real Wedding – Sarah and Alex

It’s time to revisit a wedding that I put up a little sneak peek to a while back. Even as far as sneak peeks go – it was a pretty long one.

Well, this is going to get completly out of hand now because this blog post is going to be a monster.
So I’m warning you now – go and grab yourself a coffee and let the page load completely - then get ready to scroll for Ireland…

This blog post will revisit the amazing wedding of Sarah and Alex from back in mid-June. Their original blog post was ‘A sneak peek at Alex and Sarah’s outdoor extravaganza!‘.

Here’s what I wrote back then..

“As soon as I arrived up with Sarah and took one look at the outside of the house I knew this was going to be one magical wedding. A giant marquee was in the field opposite the home of her Uncle David. He had kindly given up his beautiful house and gardens to host this beautiful wedding.
Decorations were scattered through the garden with seating plans hung from the trees with pink and silver ribbons, love hearts hanging from gate posts, little white love birds were perched inside vintage bird cages, there were pink and white paper lanterns, bunting stretched from tree to tree, umbrellas stabbed into the ground in case of rain, a chalkboard to write and record a personal message to Alex and Sarah…. the list goes on and on.”

But anyway, that’s for later – so we’ll start with the fellas. They got ready in a lovely little house they had hired for the weekend in Glaslough Village. Glaslough is on a little backroad that runs between Monaghan and Emmyvale. It’s a quant little town with just a few shops, a pub and a castle. Sure what else do you need?

Windsor knot? The four armed knot is where it’s at.

Mammy’s boy.

Real Wedding – Cindy and Dave

A few of you may remember a post I wrote a while back called ‘Fan-Tache-Tic!‘. It was from Cindy and Daves wedding in June. That day, I brought with me a handful of moustaches on sticks that I’d made the day before from black card and kebab skewers. When I returned from the wedding I blogged purely about the moustaches and posted a few photos, but that was it. I didn’t really share too much from the day itself. You can see that blog entry here.

So, I’m back and it’s time to share with you some more shots from their day. And what a cracking day they got for it too. Blue skies with the odd white fluffy cloud which would be a welcome sight to shade me from the blistering sun. It was a scorcher!

The morning zoomed by pretty quick with me spending sometime with Cindy at her folks home where inside it was all about the tea and sandwiches and outside a beautiful old E-Type Jaguar was being readied with ribbons.
